Best RSI Indicator (LuxAlgo Ultimate RSI)

A trend-following rebuild of the RSI, free and open-source from LuxAlgo, ported to MetaTrader 4 and 5.

IndicatorMT4 and MT5Modified RSIFree / open-sourceTrend-following

The "Best RSI Indicator" in this listing is a MetaTrader port of Ultimate RSI, a free indicator published by LuxAlgo. LuxAlgo gives it away across TradingView, MetaTrader 4 and 5, and NinjaTrader, so the honest starting point is that you are looking at a free, open-source tool rather than a paid product.

It reworks the standard RSI so the oscillator leans with a trend instead of fading it. The change sits in the math: rather than averaging raw price changes, it weights them with a rolling range, which lets the line reach the overbought or oversold band sooner and hold there while a move continues.

This is an analysis overlay, not a trading robot. There is no automated entry, no win rate and no verified track record to quote, because an indicator only draws a line and colours zones. What it does well is give a cleaner read of trend strength than the classic RSI, which tends to whipsaw around its thresholds in strong moves.

You should not pay for this. It is LuxAlgo's free, open-source Ultimate RSI. A separate MQL5 listing sells the same indicator for about $99 with no reviews. Take the official build from the LuxAlgo library instead of a repackaged copy.

The author of the original script states it is not a standalone system. Use it to confirm trend and time exits alongside your own method, not as a buy or sell signal on its own.

What the rolling range changes

The classic RSI averages raw up and down closes, so in a strong trend it keeps pulling back toward the middle and hands you early, false reversal hints. Ultimate RSI swaps that raw change for a rolling range measure, which gives more weight to bars that print fresh highs or lows.

The practical result is an oscillator that reaches the overbought or oversold band sooner and stays there while the move runs, so a break of the band reads as trend continuation rather than an automatic reversal.

Smoothing and the signal line

You set how reactive the line is through the smoothing method, listed here from fastest to smoothest:

  • EMA: the quickest to turn, useful for early reads and short timeframes.
  • SMA: an even, middle of the road response.
  • RMA (Wilder): closest to the feel of the original RSI.
  • TMA: the smoothest, best when you want to cut noise on higher timeframes.
  • A separate signal line, with its own smoothing choice, produces momentum crossovers much like MACD does.

Reading the zones

A cross above the overbought level shades green and points to a sustained uptrend, while a drop below oversold shades red for a downtrend. The 50 midline separates bullish from bearish control, and the signal line crossover times shifts in momentum.

Because it holds trends longer, it is more useful for staying in a move and timing an exit than for calling exact tops and bottoms.

Free tool, paid repackages

LuxAlgo publishes Ultimate RSI for free on TradingView, MetaTrader and NinjaTrader. The copy in this listing is a MetaTrader port of that script. A separate MQL5 listing prices the same indicator near $99 and carries no reviews, and community .ex4 and .ex5 builds also circulate on trading forums.

None of the repackaged builds add anything you cannot get from the official free version, so there is no reason to pay for it or to trust an unofficial binary over the LuxAlgo download.

Features

  • Modified RSI that stays with a trend instead of fading extremes
  • Rolling range weighting so new highs and lows carry more influence
  • Four smoothing choices: EMA, SMA, RMA and TMA, fast through smooth
  • Separate signal line with its own smoothing for momentum crossovers
  • Green and red zone shading for sustained up and down moves
  • Adjustable length, smoothing method and price source
  • Runs on both MT4 and MT5, any symbol and any timeframe

Performance

An indicator has no trading performance to verify: no win rate, drawdown or live signal applies, because it never places a trade. The tool is distributed free by LuxAlgo on TradingView and MetaTrader. A $99 MQL5 listing (v1.0, 0 reviews, April 2025) repackages the same free code.

Pros

  • Genuinely free and open-source, from a well known indicator author
  • Behaves better than the classic RSI inside strong trends
  • Four smoothing modes and a signal line give real flexibility
  • Works on MT4 and MT5, any pair and any timeframe
  • Transparent logic you can read, not a black box

Cons

  • It is one indicator, not a complete or automated strategy
  • Like any RSI variant it still lags and can mislead in flat ranges
  • The generic "Best RSI" branding hides that it is simply LuxAlgo Ultimate RSI
  • A paid MQL5 listing charges about $99 for what LuxAlgo gives away
  • The repackaged .ex4 and .ex5 here are unofficial, so prefer the official build

Setup

  1. Take the official free build from the LuxAlgo library rather than a paid or repackaged copy
  2. Add it to the chart, then set length, smoothing method and price source to taste
  3. Read it with market structure: trust overbought and oversold breaks only along the higher timeframe trend
  4. Use the signal line crossover and the 50 midline for momentum and exits, not blind reversals
  5. Confirm every read with price action before acting, since the indicator does not place trades

Verdict

As a free, open-source RSI rebuild, Ultimate RSI is a sensible upgrade over the default oscillator for anyone who trades with the trend. The rolling range change is a real idea, not a cosmetic tweak, and the smoothing options let you tune how fast it reacts.

Just keep it in perspective. It is a support tool, not a system, and it carries no verified performance because indicators cannot have any. Pair it with a tested method and your own risk rules, take the free official build, and there is no reason to pay the $99 that a reseller asks for the same thing.
