A trading session is one block of the 24-hour forex day, named after a financial centre. The four are Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York. Sessions overlap, and the London and New York overlap is usually the busiest part of the day.
Forex trades from Sunday 17:00 to Friday 17:00 New York time, but activity is far from even. Traders split the day into sessions to describe who is at their desks.
The what is forex lesson covers the whole trading week.
The four sessions in UTC
Each session follows its city's business hours, so the times are conventions rather than official rules. In January they sit roughly here, in UTC:
- Sydney: 20:00 to 05:00
- Tokyo: 00:00 to 09:00
- London: 08:00 to 17:00
- New York: 13:00 to 22:00
The times shift by an hour when a city moves to or from summer time, and cities change on different dates. The market hours tool shows the live sessions in your own time zone.
Why sessions matter for your trades
More participants means deeper liquidity. The London and New York overlap, 13:00 to 17:00 UTC in January, usually brings the tightest spreads on major pairs.
The New York close at 17:00 local time is also the daily rollover. A position still open then pays or earns one night of swap, and spreads often widen for a few minutes.
A quick conversion: in January New York is on UTC-5, so the rollover falls at 22:00 UTC. In July it is on UTC-4, so the rollover falls at 21:00 UTC.
