How the forex trading day works
Forex trades around the clock from Sunday evening to Friday evening, New York time. The day passes from Sydney to Tokyo, London and New York, and the busiest hours are when two of them overlap.
London and New York overlap for a few hours every afternoon in Europe. EUR/USD, GBP/USD and gold usually see their biggest moves and tightest spreads then.
Questions
When is the best time to trade forex?
Usually during the London and New York overlap, when volume and liquidity are highest. For yen and Australian dollar pairs, the Tokyo session matters more.
When does the forex market close for the weekend?
At 17:00 New York time on Friday. It reopens at 17:00 New York time on Sunday, which is Monday morning in Asia.
Do session times change during the year?
Yes. The US, UK and Australia switch to daylight saving on different dates, so the gaps between sessions change by an hour a few weeks a year. This page adjusts automatically.
