Reading the heat map
Each cell shows how far the row currency moved against the column currency over the period. Green means the row currency gained, red that it lost, and the stronger the colour, the bigger the move.
Pairs without a direct quote are worked out from the dollar pairs, so the whole table always adds up. Strength is each currency's average change against the other seven.
Change of A/B = (1 + change of A in USD) ÷ (1 + change of B in USD) − 1
Questions
How do traders use a currency heat map?
To pair a strong currency with a weak one. If the euro is the strongest and the yen the weakest, EUR/JPY is where the clearest move has been.
Why are some periods empty?
The map needs prices from the start of the period. Right after a long market close, the shorter periods may not have enough data yet.
Does a strong currency keep rising?
Not necessarily. The map shows what has happened. Strength can continue in a trend or reverse after a big move, so use it with your own analysis.
