How correlation is measured
For each pair of instruments, the calculator compares their price changes over the same time steps, 5 minutes for 24 hours and 1 hour for longer periods. +100 means they always move together, −100 that they always move in opposite directions.
Using price changes rather than prices avoids a common trap: two charts that both trend up look correlated even when their day to day moves are unrelated.
Correlation = Pearson coefficient of log returns over common time steps
Questions
Why does correlation matter?
Two trades on strongly correlated pairs are close to one bigger trade. Buying EUR/USD and GBP/USD together roughly doubles your exposure to the dollar.
Why are EUR/USD and USD/CHF negatively correlated?
The dollar is the base currency in one and the quote currency in the other. When the dollar strengthens, EUR/USD falls and USD/CHF rises.
Does correlation change over time?
Yes, sometimes quickly. Compare the 24 hour and 7 day periods: a big difference means the relationship is shifting.
