How margin is calculated
Margin is the part of your equity the broker sets aside while a position is open. It is the position value divided by your leverage, converted to your account currency.
Margin level shows how much room you have: equity divided by used margin. The lower it gets, the closer you are to a margin call and stop out.
Margin = lots × contract × price of base currency ÷ leverageMargin level = equity ÷ margin × 100%
Questions
What happens when I run out of margin?
When margin level falls to the broker's margin call level you get a warning. At the stop out level the broker starts closing positions, the biggest loser first.
What is free margin?
Equity minus used margin: the amount still available to open new positions or absorb floating losses.
Is the margin for gold the same as for forex?
Not always. Many brokers apply lower leverage to metals, indices and crypto than to forex. Check the margin rate in your broker's specification.
Trade the same, pay less
Every lot you trade pays spread or commission. Open your account through AutoFXRebate and the broker pays part of that cost back to you as a rebate.
Trading forex and CFDs on margin carries a high risk of losing money. These tools give estimates for planning and education, not investment advice.
