How compounding works

Each period's profit is added to the balance, so the next period earns on a bigger amount. 5% a month for 12 months is not 60% but almost 80%.

The same works in reverse. A losing month shrinks the base that later months grow from, which is why steady small gains beat large swings.

  • Balance after a period = balance × (1 + gain %) − withdrawal + deposit
  • Yearly equivalent = (1 + gain per period)^(periods per year) − 1

Questions

Is 10% a month realistic?

Very few traders keep it up. Compounded it is over 200% a year. Plan with modest numbers and treat the high ones as the best case.

Should I reinvest all the profit?

Reinvesting grows the account fastest but also grows the money at risk. Many traders withdraw part of each month's profit, which this calculator can model.

Does the calculator include losing periods?

It uses the same gain every period. Real results vary, and a drawdown in the middle changes the outcome more than the average suggests.

Trade the same, pay less

Every lot you trade pays spread or commission. Open your account through AutoFXRebate and the broker pays part of that cost back to you as a rebate.

Trading forex and CFDs on margin carries a high risk of losing money. These tools give estimates for planning and education, not investment advice.
