Commission is a fixed fee per lot charged on top of a thin spread. Raw and zero spread accounts are the main ones that charge it. It is quoted per side, for opening or for closing, or per round turn, which covers both, and it is due win or lose.
On a standard account the broker's fee sits inside the spread. On a commission account it arrives as a separate charge: a set amount for every lot you trade.

Per side or round turn
Brokers quote commission in two styles. Per side means you pay it when you open and again when you close. Round turn is one figure that covers both.
So $3.50 per side and $7 round turn are the same price: $7 for a full 1-lot trade. These are illustrative figures; read your own account page for the real ones.
Commission scales with volume. At $7 round turn, 0.30 lot pays $7 × 0.30 = $2.10, and a losing trade pays the same as a winning one.
Comparing commission with a spread
To compare accounts, turn commission into pips: round-turn commission per lot ÷ pip value per lot. On EUR/USD with a USD account, $7 ÷ $10 = 0.7 pip.
A raw spread account at 0.1 pip plus $7 therefore costs 0.8 pip in total, the same as a standard account with a 0.8 pip spread.

Is forex commission charged per side or round turn?
It depends on the broker. A per side figure is paid twice per trade, while a round turn figure already covers opening and closing.
Do standard accounts charge commission?
Usually not on forex pairs, because the broker's charge is built into a wider spread. Some brokers do charge commission on certain instruments, so check the account terms.
