Pip value is the amount of money a one pip move adds to or takes from a position. It equals the pip size times the units traded, counted in the quote currency. On one standard lot of EUR/USD in a US dollar account it is $10.
Pip value turns a pip, the standard price step, into money. The pip lesson works it out on three instruments, and the lot size lesson uses it to size trades from risk.
How to calculate pip value
Pip value = pip size × units traded
The answer comes out in the quote currency, so convert it at the current rate if your account uses another currency.
Here is a worked example for one standard lot in a USD account, with round illustrative prices:
- EUR/USD: 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10.
- USD/JPY at 150.00: 0.01 × 100,000 = 1,000 yen, and 1,000 ÷ 150.00 = $6.67.
Pip value scales in a straight line with size: 0.10 lot of EUR/USD is $1 per pip and 0.01 lot is $0.10. The pip value calculator handles other pairs and account currencies.
Using pip value to size a trade
Pip value links your stop distance to the money you put at risk:
Lots = money at risk ÷ (stop distance in pips × pip value per lot)
With $20 at risk and a 25 pip stop on EUR/USD, that is $20 ÷ (25 × $10) = 0.08 lot. To check: 0.08 lot is $0.80 per pip, and 25 × $0.80 = $20.
Questions fréquentes
Is pip value the same for every pair?
No. It is a flat $10 per lot only when the US dollar is the quote currency and your account is in dollars; for other pairs it moves with the conversion rate.
Does leverage change pip value?
No. Pip value depends on the pair and the lot size, while leverage only changes how much margin the trade locks.
Leverage multiplies losses as well as gains; only trade money you can afford to lose.

Bid priceThe bid price is the price at which you can sell a currency pair right now. It is the lower of the two prices in every forex quote. You open a sell trade at the bid, and you close a buy trade at the bid.
Ask priceThe ask, or offer, is the price at which you can buy a currency pair right now. It is the higher of the two prices in every forex quote. You open a buy trade at the ask, and you close a sell trade at the ask.
PipetteA pipette is one tenth of a pip, shown as the extra last digit of most forex quotes. On EUR/USD it is 0.00001, the fifth decimal, and on yen pairs such as USD/JPY it is 0.001. Traders also call it a fractional pip.
Market orderA market order is an instruction to buy or sell straight away at the best price available. A buy fills at the ask and a sell at the bid. You get a fast fill but not a guaranteed price, so in a fast market the fill can slip.
Pending orderA pending order is an instruction to trade later, once price reaches a level you set. Limit orders wait for a better price than now; stop orders wait for price to break through a level. Until it triggers, no position is open.
Stop lossA stop loss is an order that closes your trade at a set price to cap the loss. It turns into a market order when price reaches it, so in a fast market or a gap it can fill at a worse price.
