Free margin

ខ្លឹមសារនេះមានតែជាភាសាអង់គ្លេសសិន។

Free margin is the part of your equity not tied up as margin by open trades. It equals equity minus used margin. You need free margin to open new positions, and it shrinks as open trades lose money.

AutoFXRebate

Free margin is the room your account has left for new trades and for losses on open ones. The margin and stop out lesson shows how it shrinks as a trade moves against you.

How free margin is calculated

Free margin = equity minus used margin

Equity is your balance plus the floating profit or loss of open trades, so free margin moves with every price tick. Used margin is the deposit your open positions lock.

A bar showing $1,000 of equity split into $550 of used margin and $450 of free margin, giving a margin level of 181.8%.

Here is a worked example with round illustrative prices. A $1,000 account at 1:100 buys 0.50 lot of EUR/USD at 1.10000, which locks $550. Free margin is $1,000 minus $550 = $450.

If EUR/USD then falls 50 pips, the trade is down 50 × $5 = $250. Equity drops to $750, and free margin to $750 minus $550 = $200.

What happens when free margin runs out

Free margin reaches zero when equity equals used margin, which is a margin level of 100%. From there you cannot open trades that need more margin.

Each broker and account type sets its own margin call and stop out levels. If losses continue down to the stop out level, positions are closed automatically.

សំណួរ

Can free margin be negative?

Yes. If equity falls below used margin, the platform shows negative free margin until the trades recover or the stop out level closes them.

Why did my free margin drop when I opened a trade?

Opening a trade locks margin, and free margin is what remains of equity after that. The spread also makes a new trade start slightly negative, which lowers equity a little.

Leverage multiplies losses as well as gains; only trade money you can afford to lose.
